Request a quote from your local One Call Handyman!
Do you have a maintenance, repair or renovation job around your home to be done, but have no idea who to hire? Hiring a handyman is a great solution as they have experience across a wide range of home tasks, but finding a good one is key.
Below are 6 key areas to look for when considering a handyman to complete your next home task.
Reputation: Googling ‘handyman’ in your local area will bring up a list of businesses around you. From there you need to narrow down who to pick. To do this, check their website and read their reviews on Google. Their website should provide information as to the services they offer, while their reviews let you know what the company is like to work with, their quality of workmanship, customer service and staff professionalism. A company with few reviews or low-rated reviews should raise a red flag. Have they not been in business for long, have customers not been happy with their work, should you trust them with your deposit and access to your home?
QBCC Licensed: A handyman is required to be licenced in certain trades and skills. Ensure your handyman is licenced by looking for their licence number on their website. You want to ensure the handyman coming into your home not only has the experience to complete the task but also has the required licences to have the task legally signed off under industry regulations and laws. You do not want to find your new deck, fence or lighting is not compliant after the handyman has been paid and left your job. Being registered as a QBCC handyman, also means they cannot take your deposit and run without losing their licence, giving you additional piece of mind.
Police Clearance – Inviting a tradesperson into your home means they gain access to various areas of your residence. They might notice your alarm system, your dog in the backyard, or a window latch that doesn’t lock properly. If the handyman is dishonest, they may return with illegal activities in mind, so it’s important to make sure your handyman has police clearance. To gain clearance they must prove legally that they have no past criminal record or pending convictions.
Workmanship Guarantee – A workmanship guarantee shows that the handyman company is there to do the job right the first time. Guaranteeing the workmanship of any job means they will take care in providing a finished service that you are completely satisfied with. If an issue did arise, as part of their guarantee they would return to the site to rectify the problem. This is a great sign that the handyman company is established and prides itself on offering the right solutions and doing a good job every time, so make sure you ask if they guarantee their workmanship before engaging their services.
Communication – A prompt response to your initial enquiry and ongoing updates, shows the handyman business has the right people in place to do your job. Receiving your quote in a timely manner is a good start. Having questions and queries answered promptly following that quote shows great communication. Good communication is a key element to look for, as that communication should then flow through as your job progresses with updates, touching base before and/or after being on-site, and updates on materials, progress time frames etc.
Looking through the company’s Google reviews as mentioned earlier, may also give you more insight into their communication style with clients.
Quote – If you have requested quotes from multiple companies, make sure you compare ‘apples for apples’. Are they using the same materials, offering the same solution, taking the same amount of time? If not, you need to investigate what the differences are and why. Accepting the cheapest or the least detailed quote can lead to unexpected and unwanted surprises at the end, whether it be financially, at the finish of the job or both.
